DAVENPORT, Fla. – Cornell's baseball team began spring break action Friday with a doubleheader split against previously-unbeaten Clark University in the Sunshine State.
Jimmy Moltini drove in three runs and
Nate Pacetti pitched into the sixth inning in Cornell's 7-4 Game 1 victory over the Cougars, a 25-win team a season ago.
Clark rolled to a 21-4 win in Game 2.
Reigning Midwest Conference Performer of the Week
Jackson Hill went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs for Cornell (2-3) in the opener. Moltini also had two hits, including a two-run single that put the Rams ahead 5-0 in the fourth.
Luke Hull tripled and
Caleb Smith doubled for the Rams, who outhit Clark 8-5.
Senior right-hander
Nate Pacetti (1-0) earned his first win on the mound, allowing four runs while striking out six over 5.1 innings. He did not issue a walk.
Cameron Bradford fired 1.2 scoreless innings in relief for the save, striking out three.
Thomas Hunt carried a hot bat for Cornell in Game 2, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Hunt belted a three-run homer in the top of the third that pushed the Rams in front, 4-1.
Clark took control with eight runs in the third, seven in the fourth and five more in the fifth. The Cougars finished with 17 hits against seven Cornell pitchers.
The Rams had nine hits, including a double by
Jackson Simmons. Hull scored two runs.
Coming up – The Rams continue spring break action Saturday with a 2 p.m. (Central Time) doubleheader against Alfred (0-0) in Auburndale, Fla.
