CEDAR RAPIDS – Cornell turned the ball over five times, which made for a tough afternoon in Saturday's 42-7 loss to 22nd-ranked Coe in the 123rd meeting between the football rivals at Clark Field.
The Rams (1-1), who put up 45 points in the season opener, didn't find the end zone until the final series of this one. The Kohawks (2-0) cashed in three touchdowns off Cornell turnovers and had four scoring plays of at least 40 yards.
Senior running back Hayden Howard capped Cornell's lone scoring drive with a 22-yard run with 20 seconds left to go.
The Kohawks held a 453-287 advantage in total yards and came away +4 in the takeaway column. Cornell was intercepted three times and lost
two of its five fumbles.
"With a lot of things that happened on Saturday, we were our biggest obstacle," Cornell head coach Vince Brautigam said. "At some positions we showed a lack of maturity. It's my job to get us better in the areas we made mistakes and improve on them over the next two weeks. We just need to get back to executing plays."
Cornell had a promising opening drive stall on a Kohawk interception in the end zone, and that's how most of the game went for the Rams. Coe misfired on a pair of 39-yard field goals on its first two possessions, leading to a scoreless first quarter.
Coe went up 7-0 on a short touchdown run with 8:27 remaining in the second quarter. The Kohawks drove deep into Ram territory on their next drive, but Cornell turned them back with a forced fumble by Jeremy Demlow and recovery by Alex Latow. However one play later, Cornell coughed the ball back over to the Kohawks at the 8-yard line. Coe capitalized and made it 14-0 on a quarterback sneak, a lead the Kohawks took into halftime.
Momentum stayed with the Kohawks in the third quarter. Coe intercepted Cornell's first pass attempt of the second half and returned it 68 yards for a touchdown. The margin stretched to 28-0 on a 68-yard pass play with 5:18 left in the third quarter.
The Kohawks struck for scoring strikes of 43 and 41 yards in the fourth quarter, increasing the lead to 42-0 with 2:24 remaining.
Coe limited record-setting quarterback Juan Flores to 100 yards on 15-of-27 passing. He was picked off three times and sacked twice. Justin Cox had six receptions for 54 yards, while James Scully netted 48 yards on four catches. Sophomore Ethan Thompson led the rushing attack with 61 yards on 15 carries.
Cornell's defense played on a short field for much of the game. The Rams were solid up front, limiting Coe's rushing attack to 111 yards on 45 carries.
"Our defense played well for three-plus quarters," Brautigam said. "We played the run exceptionally well, and played the pass well up until the fourth quarter. We did some good things on the defensive side of the ball."
Latow posted a game-high 12 tackles for the Rams. Geoffrey Miller finished with 11 tackles and one sack. Demlow and Nick Brautigam had 10 tackles apiece, with Demlow adding two tackles for loss. Shane McNally was strong up front with three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.
Coming up – The Rams (1-0 MWC) enter their bye week before returning to Midwest Conference action Sept. 28 for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Monmouth. The Fighting Scots (1-1 overall, 1-0 MWC) rolled to a 59-14 home win over Beloit Saturday.
