Augustana edges Rams in dual finale, 23-19

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Cornell's wrestling team won five of the 10 matches Wednesday night, but bonus points put host Augustana over the top for a 23-19 team victory inside Carver Center.

The Rams fell to Augustana for the first time since 2012 and closed the dual season with a 3-6 record.

Augustana (1-7) clung to a 20-19 lead going into the decisive heavyweight match between Cornell's Alex Heisdorffer (JR/Walford, Iowa) and Daniel Skold. Skold tied it at 1-1 with an escape early in the third period and then countered a Heisdorffer shot with a takedown in the final seconds for a 3-1 victory.

Cornell was in position to take the dual after back-to-back wins from Bryce Oveson (JR/Wilton, Iowa) at 184 and Kendale McCoy (SR/Oak Park, Ill.) at 197. Oveson controlled Triston Richardson for a 13-4 major decision, boosting his season record to 19-3. McCoy (9-11) earned a 9-5 decision over Cannon Kelly, getting the Rams within one point.

The Rams tallied four bonus-point wins on the night, highlighted by a 17-2 technical fall from senior 165-pounder Nic Jarvis (SR/Iowa City, Iowa) over T.J. Lunney. Jarvis improved to 27-10 with his 76th career victory.

Freshman Evan Husko (FR/Wauconda, Ill.) shut out Augustana's Ben Gruenstein for an 8-0 major decision at 133 pounds. Senior Jake Wulf (SR/Odebolt, Iowa) (13-16) scored a 10-2 major decision over Alex Cruz at 141, putting the Rams ahead 8-6 through three matches.

The Vikings recorded pins at 125 (Ellex Williams over Griffin Gravel (FR/Wyoming, Iowa), 2:38) and 174 (Josh Bush over John Marsh (JR/Denver, Colo.), 1:34). Cornell 149-pounder Klayton Keller (SO/Des Moines, Iowa) gave up a 27-11 technical fall to Freddy Terranova. Augustana's Danny Terronez won 7-3 over Casey Allen (SO/Gilberts, Ill.) at 157.
