MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's wrestling team scored bonus points in five matches and took down Simpson, 30-18, in Thursday's season-opening dual inside the Small Sport Center.

The Rams (1-0) recorded their 18th consecutive series win over Simpson (0-1) in a quick 1-hour, 6-minute dual that hung in the balance most of the way.

Cornell registered three pins on the night, including a pivotal fall by senior 184-pounder Colin Honderd with the Rams leading 20-15. Honderd had three takedowns and a four-point near fall before pinning Shane Mathias in 4:06.

The Rams then clinched the team win with a 14-5 major decision by sophomore Treyten Steffen at 197. Steffen dominated Andrew Wolff with six takedowns and put the Rams ahead 30-15.

Trailing 12-6 through three matches, Cornell charged ahead with three straight wins from the heart of the lineup. Sophomore Cristian Dixon started the comeback with an 8-4 decision over Sam McCoy at 149.

Cornell's two returning all-Americans Killian Perrigon and Casey Allen kept momentum with the home team. Perrigon scored eight near-fall points in a 19-4 technical fall over Robert Silva at 157. Allen wasted little time in pinning Jakob Slavin (1:54) at 165, giving the Rams a 20-12 advantage on the scoreboard.

Cornell 133-pounder Evan Husko opened his junior campaign with a fall in 4:08 over Jason Padilla.

The Rams held a decisive 20-6 advantage in total takedowns and recorded 12 near-falls points for the meet.

Simpson received pins at 125 from 10th-ranked Dylan McChesney (:35 over Nathan Bednarczyk) and 141 from Zach Stewart (2:31 over freshman Grant Harbour).

Cornell's Jacob Sherzer dropped an 8-5 decision to Shyler Langley at 174. At heavyweight, Simpson's Colton Kinnison scored a late takedown in the final period to edge Zachary Finn, 5-4.

The Rams compete in the Super 8 Invitational Saturday in Platteville, Wis. Action gets underway at 9 a.m.
