Rams battle to wire in several bouts with No. 12 Duhawks

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's wrestling team wound up on the short end of four tight matches early and fell 35-3 to No. 12 nationally-ranked Loras in Thursday's home-opening meet inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
 
The young Rams (3-1), who had seven freshmen and sophomores in the lineup, were dealt their first dual defeat of the season. Loras moved to 2-1.
 
Junior 197-pounder Treyten Steffen accounted for Cornell's team points with a 4-2 decision over Derek Venteicher. Steffen (3-3) came back from a 2-0 deficit, scoring a reversal in the second period and then a go-ahead takedown in the third.  
 
The Rams had their chances in multiple other matches, giving up four decisions by a grand total of nine points. Two of the losses went overtime.
 
Cornell freshman 125-pounder Jase Van Pelt (2-2) battled Jared Hensley to a 6-6 tie through regulation before falling 8-6 in sudden victory. Van Pelt's four-point near fall put him ahead 4-2 in the second period.
 
At 157, freshman Gabriel Smith (11-4) took 14th-ranked Dustin Bohren to overtime with a third-period reversal. Bohren survived with a 6-4 sudden victory.  
 
Cornell 133-pounder Evan Husko (5-3) was edged 4-1 by Aiden Evans. At 141, freshman Carter Fecht (5-8) lost in another tight decision, 3-1.
 
The Duhawks earned bonus points in five of the final seven bouts, including a pin in 2:02 by 11th-ranked heavyweight Wyatt Wriedt over Landen Schemmel.
 
Loras received major decisions at 149 (Jalen Schropp 10-2 over Landon Card), 174 (Tad Griffith 9-1 over Dahson DeJong) and 184 (top-ranked Shane Liegel 15-3 over Cael McLaren). Loras' 12th-ranked Gabe Fiser earned a 16-0 technical fall over Corey Stewart at 165.   
 
The Duhawks finished the meet with 20 takedowns and 22 near-fall points.
 
Coming up – Cornell wrestles third-ranked UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m. Sunday at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis.
