MONMOUTH, Ill. – Cornell juniors
Hailey Carolan and
Ava Claussen-Tubbs successfully defended titles in their specialty events during Saturday's conclusion of the Midwest Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships at Huff Athletic Center.
Sophomore sprinter
Willow Ziegler also captured gold on Day 2 for the Rams, who turned in eight all-conference performances over the two-day competition. Cornell took fifth in the team standings with 79 points.
Carolan won the indoor high jump for the third consecutive year, clearing 5-2.50. It was the seventh conference title overall for the three-time all-American.
Claussen-Tubbs repeated in the 800 in record style, crossing the line in 2:15.93. She lowered her own school record set earlier this season by 1.28 seconds and claimed her sixth MWC title as a Ram.
Ziegler clocked a personal-best 1:00.67 to win the 400. Seeded third, Ziegler earned a .65-second victory over Illinois College's Brooke Oakley.
Senior
Katie Lammers anchored the distance medley to a runner-up finish in 13:05.15. The young group included sophomore
Mackenzie Engbert and freshmen
Alexa Hugart and
Carley Seeley.
Ziegler ran the opening leg on the third-place 4x400 (4:09.76), which featured Carolan, Hugart and anchor Claussen-Tubbs. The same quartet won Friday's sprint medley.
Junior
Alyza Koppes earned her second distance medal of the weekend by taking third in the 3000 (10:30.28). She was Friday's runner-up in the 5000.
The Rams received sixth-place finishes from Carolan in the 400 (1:03.00) and
Lidia Dahlman in the 3000 (10:39.15).
