ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Cornell all-American
Isaac vanWestrienen kicked off his junior outdoor season in grand fashion at the Wash U Distance Carnival Thursday night.
VanWestrienen beat 174 finishers in the men's 10,000-meter run and took home the top prize with a sensational time of 29:15.97, which is the fastest NCAA Division III mark this season and ranks No. 18 all-time in Division III.
VanWestrienen outkicked NCAA indoor 3000-meter champion Braden Nicholson of North Central in the final lap for the victory. Nicholson crossed nearly three seconds behind in 29:18.44.
VanWestrienen shattered Cornell's long-standing school record of 30:22.20, set by three-time all-American Tony Every in 1991.
VanWestrienen now owns five school records in track & field.
