MOUNT VERNON – The Rams crowned 11 event champions at their annual Cornell Track & Field Invitational on Saturday's Senior Day at Van Metre Field at Ash Park.
Cornell's women took runner-up in the six-team field with 157 points, only six shy of Grinnell. The Rams were led by two-time winners
Hailey Carolan and
Alyza Koppes.
The Rams also finished second in the men's division with 152 points, trailing only Grinnell (188).
Hadley Beaty and
Chase Staker both earned two titles.
The all-American Carolan won the high jump (5-2.5) and ran leadoff on the champion 4x400 relay (4:19.13) comprised of Koppes,
Mackenzie Engbert and anchor
Ava Claussen-Tubbs. Carolan's busy day included runner-up showings in the long jump (15-6.75), 100 hurdles (16.14) and 400 hurdles (1:09.93).
Senior
Bri Osterson posted a winning mark of 111-9 in the javelin, while first-year
Maya Hodge took first in the triple jump (31-4.5) and second in the high jump (4-8.75). Koppes was victorious in the 1500, crossing in 4:55.11 in a tight finish with runner-up Claussen-Tubbs (4:56.49).
The women also received second-place efforts from
Sophie Stumbo in the 3000 steeplechase (12:58.05),
Willow Ziegler in the 100 (13.35) and
Olivia Cotton in the 400 (1:06.28).
Cornell's men capped a strong team performance with a victory in the 4x400 relay, which freshman
Chase Staker anchored in 3:26.93. The quartet included Beaty,
Jaxin McGuire and
Currey Jacobs.
Seniors
Niko Platre (triple jump – 38-5.5),
Caleb Schopen (3000 steeplechase – 9:51.90) and
Gabe Soda (1500 – 4:03.53) were crowned event champions in their final home meets. Beaty won the 100 in 11.02 and Staker claimed the 400 title in 50.51.
Prior to Saturday's running events, coach
Jerry Monner and his assistants were presented a trophy as the 2025 MWC Men's Indoor Coaching Staff of the Year. Cornell also recognized the contributions of its 15 seniors in the program.
Coming up – The Rams compete Friday at Mount Mercy's Distance Carnival in Cedar Rapids and the UW-Platteville Invitational (select distance runners only) in Platteville, Wis.
