Small takes runner-up, Rams duo reaches Round of 16 at ITA Regionals

SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Cornell women's tennis team upheld expectations at the ITA Midwest Regional and Midwest Invite, highlighted by successful results in various draws.

The Rams finished 7-7 overall between both the ITA Midwest Regional and the Midwest Invite events. 

The Rams had three players in the ITA singles main draw, with two players being seeded, junior Mac Graves and sophomore Michaela Clark, both with #17 seeds. This is the first time Cornell women's tennis players have been seeded in program history. 

#17 Clark started in the round of 64, with a win over Vanessa Pham of Hamline University, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4, then fell in the round of 32 against Kaityln Remke of UW-Whitewater, 6-2, 2-6, 10-7. #17 Mac Graves fell in the round of 64 against Grinnell's Kiera Healy, 7-5, 6-3. 

Junior Tansy Graves also competed in the main singles draw, with a win in the round of 128 over Lily Holmberg from St. Catherine University, 6-2, 6-2. Graves fell in the next round to #9 Molly Asfeld from UW-Whitewater, 6-3, 6-3.

This weekend marked the first time since 2017 that Cornell had a player reach the round of 32, and three players represented in the round of 64 at the women's regional event.

The Rams also had two doubles teams competing in the ITA main doubles draw, with pair of Clark and Mac Graves receiving a #9 seed. Clark and Mac Graves took a 8-0 victory over Pham/Andersen from Hamline University, and a round of 32 win over Stroebel/Packer of Gustavus Adolphus College, 8-2. In the round of 16, the Rams fell to two-time ITA Cup Qualifiers, #2 Szalay/Austin of Gustavus, 8-5. Tansy Graves and freshman Annika Dox, fell in the round of 64 to Jorgenson/Stadter of UW-LaCrosse, 8-1.

Cornell has fielded a doubles pair in the round of 16 in back-to-back years.

Teammates senior Audrey Small and Dox competed in the Midwest Invite singles draw. Small went 3-1 in matches over the weekend.

To start the round of 16, Small took out Berkeley Cox from Macalester 8-2, then finished the quarterfinals with a 8-6 win over College of St. Benedict's Lila Collins. Small completed an 8-4 decision over UW-Steven's Point's Annie Wierzbicki to advance to the finals on Saturday. Small finished runner-up in her bracket, losing in the finals to Jemima Vitou of Gustavus, 8-4. Dox dropped her opening match to Christina Ekkela, 8-4. 

Coming Up – The Rams play at home tomorrow, against Concordia University of Chicago and Wartburg College. First serve is set for 9 AM.
