MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's Esports teams continue to build momentum this spring semester across multiple games with several teams positioned for playoff runs in the postseason.
Valorant
The Cornell Valorant team has competed exclusively in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) this semester and has established itself as one of the top teams in its division. Currently holding a 5–1 record, Cornell is the No. 1 seed in its division and is on track to advance to the NECC playoffs.
Team captain
Patrick Hetzel-Warhol emphasized the team's growth since last semester. "We have been working to fix mental issues from last semester, and we have been doing a great job of fixing last semester's problems in game and out. We're always looking to improve and win with every game being more competitive than the last."
Marvel Rivals
Cornell's Marvel Rivals team has also found success in NECC competition, posting a 4–1 record so far this season. Among their notable victories is a win over St. Ambrose University, a familiar opponent from the Midwest Valley Esports Conference (MVEC) and the previous MVEC Marvel Rivals tournament. The team also secured an impressive 3–1 victory over Purdue University.
The team will have a March 17 doubleheader against Lakeland University and Illinois State University. Winning both matches would strengthen Cornell's path toward playoffs and a potential national tournament appearance.
Rocket League
Cornell Rocket League is currently 2–2 in NECC play, placing them as the No. 4 seed in their division. After spring break, the team will face the University of Kansas in an important matchup. Securing two more wins would allow Cornell to qualify for the playoffs.
Overwatch
The Cornell Overwatch team recently secured its first NECC conference win of the school year against Northwestern College's junior varsity team. With three matches remaining, the team is continuing to build momentum. Much of the team's focus is now on MVEC competition, where Cornell currently holds a 3–3 record this season. The team has one remaining match before MVEC playoffs, which will be held at the conference LAN event on March 27 in Jacksonville, Ill., hosted by Illinois College.
Roster growth has also been a highlight this semester. After tryouts earlier this year, the Overwatch program has doubled in size, and the team is hopeful to establish a dedicated junior varsity roster that will compete in NECC next year.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Cornell's Super Smash Bros Ultimate team has been highly competitive this semester in both NECC and MVEC play. In NECC competition, Cornell holds a 4–1 record with one match remaining before playoffs. A key highlight was a victory over St. Ambrose after previously losing to them in MVEC competition the week before.
Within the Midwest Valley Esports Conference, Cornell currently stands at 4–2 and has already secured a playoff berth. The team will compete in the MVEC postseason during the LAN finals on March 28–29 at Illinois College. Their final regular-season match will be against Jamestown University, currently seeded just ahead of Cornell.
The team recently hosted a live MVEC match against Coe on February 25, held on the Orange Carpet at Cornell. Cornell defeated Coe 2–0, drawing a strong in-person crowd of supporters, including Ulysses the Ram. The program hopes to host more live events for students and fans in the future.
Rainbow Six Siege
The Rainbow Six Siege team has shown resilience this semester while competing in the Midwest Rainbow Six Siege Conference. While the team has not yet secured a win this semester, players are continuing to improve both individually and strategically.
Team captain
Logan Pausch emphasized the team's focus on development stating, "The R6 team is currently working on molding its current roster into a more coherent and fluid team"
