STORM LAKE - It wasn't easy, but the Cornell College softball team is back in the postseason. Jill Trzaska made sure of it.
Trzaska blasted a tie-breaking two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning and fired three strong innings in relief to rally the Rams to a 7-5 Game 2 victory at Buena Vista in the regular-season finale. Cornell fell 5-4 to the Beavers in the opener.
The Rams (24-12 overall, 7-9 Iowa Conference) finished tied with Loras for fifth place in the league standings. Cornell clinched its first berth in the conference tournament since 2008.
The Rams are the No. 6 seed in the six-team, double-elimination tournament May 5-7, hosted by Luther in Decorah. Cornell slipped behind Loras in seeding due to the third tiebreaker between the schools determined by runs allowed in conference play (67-80).
Cornell meets ninth-ranked and third-seeded Coe (33-7, 13-3 IIAC) in a first-round game at 12 p.m. Thursday, May 5. Complete tournament pairings are available by clicking here.
The Rams overcame an early 4-0 deficit to beat the Beavers (12-24, 3-13 IIAC) in Game 2, which saw senior Carly Goolsby record her 100th career hit. Sam Tonelli doubled home Cornell's first run in the fourth, and the Rams added four more in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Goolsby delivered an RBI single to start Cornell's fifth-inning rally.
Buena Vista tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth, but Trzaska helped the Rams regain the lead for good in the seventh. Goolsby singled to lead off the inning, and one out later, Trzaska plated the winning runs with her second home run of the season.
Trzaska (9-5) retired the Beavers in order in the seventh to earn the victory. She surrendered just one hit and one unearned run after taking the mound in the fifth for starter Amanda Engel.
Goolsby, Trzaska and Simone Wright led the Rams with two hits apiece. Goolsby and Trzaska also scored twice.
A late Cornell rally came up short in the tight Game 1 loss. Trailing 5-2, Cornell scored twice in the top of the seventh - a solo homer from Tonelli and an RBI single from Goolsby - although Buena Vista escaped the jam with two Rams on base when the game ended.
Goolsby collected two of the team's eight hits, including her eighth double of the spring. Freshman Jackie Sernek (7-2) was dealt first loss since late March, despite striking out nine batters over 5.1 innings. She allowed five runs, two of which came across unearned in the fourth.
Career hits - Goolsby became the third Ram in this year's senior class to tally 100 career hits. She finished 4-for-8 in the Buena Vista series, putting her ninth on the program's all-time hits list with 101. Goolsby joined current teammates Wright (105 hits, tied for fifth place) and all-time leader Nicole Duncan (197 hits) in the elite club.
IIAC Tournament - With their winningest regular season behind them, the Rams now seek their first postseason win as a member of the IIAC. Cornell's lone other IIAC Tournament appearance was 2008, when the Rams went 0-2 as the No. 6 seed in games played in Waverly.
The Rams will try to avenge a pair of regular-season losses against first-round opponent Coe. Cornell fell 6-0 and 8-3 to the Kohawks on April 13 in Cedar Rapids.
The Cornell-Coe winner will play No. 2 seed Central (33-5, 14-2) at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Cornell-Coe loser will play the loser of the game between No. 1 seed Luther (34-4, 14-2) and No. 4 Simpson (22-16, 8-8)/No. 5 Loras (16-21, 7-9) at 10 a.m. Friday.
