Cornell battles Beloit down to the wire

BELOIT, Wis. – Cornell's men led for a good portion of Saturday's match, but came up just short in a 10-8 battle with Midwest Lacrosse Conference foe Beloit at Strong Stadium.

The Rams (2-8 overall, 0-3 MLC) outshot the hosts, 33-29, and held a 15-7 advantage in faceoffs won. The Buccaneers (3-6, 2-3 MLC) scored four of the final five goals in regulation to pull out the narrow victory.

Cornell freshman Carlos Siguenza (FR/Minneapolis, Minn.) bumped his season goal count to 16 with four successful strikes, all of which came in the opening 30 minutes. Austin Busse (FR/Prior Lake, Minn.) added a pair of goals for the Rams, who committed just 11 turnovers in the contest.

Michael Paquette (FR/Erie, Colo.) and Conor Hollowell (FR/Portland, Ore.) each accounted for one goal and one assist. They have totaled 16 and 13 goals, respectively, on the year.

Siguenza scored back-to-back unassisted goals to give Cornell a 2-1 lead midway through the first period. Busse made it 3-2 Rams off a feed from Paquette later in the quarter.

The Rams built their biggest lead at 5-3 on consecutive strikes from Siguenza and Paquette early in the second period. Siguenza added his fourth marker with 3:57 to go in the half as the team went intermission tied at 6-6.

Busse gave Cornell its final at 7-6 lead on a goal from Hollowell midway through the third period. Beloit responded with three unanswered goals to finish the period. Hollowell brought the Rams within 9-8 with 13:24 remaining, but Cornell was held scoreless the rest of the way.

Siguenza won 15-of-22 faceoffs and finished with a team-best nine ground balls. The Rams had 11 clears in 14 chances.

Ram goalie Evan Kedjidjian (FR/Deerfield, Ill.) saved six shots over 60 minutes. Beloit's John Murphy tallied 19 saves under heavy duress from Cornell's attack.

Coming up – Cornell makes its final scheduled road trip of the season next Saturday, April 18, with a conference match against Fontbonne (0-12 overall, 0-4 MLC) at 4 p.m. in St. Louis, Mo.
