Howe claims CoSIDA Academic All-America honors

| By:
MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's multi-sport senior standout Justin Howe has been recognized on the 2022 CoSIDA Men's At-Large Academic All-America Third Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Howe, a record-setting long-stick midfielder for the Rams' lacrosse team, earned CoSIDA All-America status in the NCAA Division III men's at-large pool comprised of the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

Howe, of Sedalia, Colo., claimed his fourth career CoSIDA Academic All-America honor. He is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American in men's soccer, garnering first team accolades in 2021 and 2020.

Five-time honoree Mike Tressel (football, wrestling) is the only student-athlete in Cornell history to win more CoSIDA Academic All-America awards than Howe. Howe is Cornell's first lacrosse player honored.

Cornell has now landed 58 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since 1972.

An engineering major, Howe compiled a 3.98 cumulative grade point average over four years on the Hilltop.

A newcomer to the sport of lacrosse, Howe made an instant impact this spring for coach Lane Zierten's 2022 Rams, who tied or broke seven team records. Howe helped the Rams (7-10 overall, 4-2 MLC) qualify for the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Tournament for the second consecutive year as the No. 3 seed.

In his first career MLC contest, Howe established a program record for most caused turnovers in a game with eight in a win at Northwestern. He wound up setting two more school records for most caused turnovers in a season (35) and per game (2.19).

A second team all-MLC selection, Howe was tabbed MLC Defensive Performer of the Week on April 4. He started 15 games for the Rams, totaling 43 ground balls and three assists.

Howe was presented the prestigious Russell W. Landis Award at Cornell's culminating 2021-22 Athletics Recognition Night in May. This spring, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most respected academic honor society.

CoSIDA has recognized the most accomplished student-athletes for academic and athletic achievement each year since 1952. CoSIDA's Academic All-America program is the longest running and most prestigious for student-athletes. More than 20,000 nominations are submitted annually.
