MOUNT VERNON – Cornell sophomore pitcher
Logan Gannon has been named to the
D3baseball.com Team of the Week following a record-breaking performance in Thursday's 4-1 victory over Elms in Davenport, Fla.
Gannon is the first Ram to claim the D3baseball.com weekly award since first baseman Walker Breard on April 14, 2015. Gannon was among four starting pitchers selected nationally for the period of March 9-15.
Gannon was also cited by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as the
NCBWA Division III Pitcher of the Week. He's the first Cornell pitcher ever to claim the award.
Gannon overwhelmed Elms with a school-record 18 strikeouts in the seven-inning contest played in his native Florida state. The 6-foot-3 right-hander surrendered only one hit, an infield single in the second inning.
Gannon struck out the side in four of the frames. He fanned the final five batters he faced.
Gannon broke Cameron Anfang's record of 16 strikeouts, set against Fitchburg State in 2019. Gannon's 18 punchouts were one shy of the long-standing Midwest Conference record from 1933.
Gannon (1-1, 4.61 ERA) and the Rams (6-6) are back in action this weekend for a three-game home series against Wisconsin Lutheran. The teams are scheduled to play a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday in Mount Vernon, followed by a single game at 11 a.m. Sunday.
