Stang, a 12-time letter winner in cross country and (indoor/outdoor) track & field, distinguished himself as one of the nation's best in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Stang enjoyed a remarkable run with three consecutive third-place All-America performances in the steeplechase (1990-92). He was only four seconds off the national champion's pace as a junior when Stang ran 9:03.61.

Stang was a three-time Midwest Conference champion in the steeplechase. He posted a top clocking of 9:03.01, which is a school record. Stang captured eight all-conference medals on the track. He won the conference indoor 1000 run in a meet record 2:31.61.

Stang was a participant at the NCAA Cross Country Championships his junior year. He earned all-conference cross country accolades in 1988 and 1990. A team captain in both cross country and track & field, Stang was voted Cornell's Paul K. Scott Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 1992.
