Gibbs made his splash in the water as a three-time conference champion and nine-time placewinner. He received three varsity letters from 1964-66. Gibbs was named captain and Most Outstanding Varsity Swimmer on the 1966 squad.
At the 1965 conference meet, Gibbs grabbed event titles in the 400 medley relay and 200 butterfly. He established a conference record (2:16.6) in winning the 200-yard butterfly.
In 1966, Gibbs successfully defended his conference crown in the 200 butterfly, while adding a runner-up in the 400 medley relay and a fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle.
The Rams won Midwest Conference team championships in 1965 and 1966. The 1965 title was the program’s first in men’s swimming since 1947.
AFTER GRADUATION
Gibbs, a master swimmer, went on to coach Moorestown SC “B” Team (1967-69) to a 31-1 record and three South Jersey Conference titles. He set three team records for the Moorestown Swim Club and earned honorable mention national AAU accolades in 1968. Later on, Gibbs garnered all-America status in 1984 (USMS long distance), 1985 (YMCA 200 freestyle relay) and 1986 (YMCA fourth in 50 backstroke).
In 2001, Gibbs was given the Alumni Achievement Award for his service as a class agent. He was a member of the President Club for more than 25 years.
