Layne was a two-sport standout, making her mark as an All-American sprinter and one of the Rams' most prolific soccer scorers. Cornell's 2002 Senior Female Athlete of the Year enjoyed a banner final season on the track, which began with her claiming the 400-meter title at the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships. She remains Cornell's last conference champion in a women's sprint event.

Layne qualified for the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 400 and gained All-America status with a seventh-place finish in 58.58 seconds. She returned to nationals later that spring and placed 10th in the 400 (56.71) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Her fastest times in the 200 (25.58) and 400 (56.53) still stand as program bests.

On the pitch, Layne was equally dynamic as a four-year soccer starter and three-time all-conference performer. She gathered first team all-IIAC honors in her final two seasons, while finishing runner-up for IIAC Player of the Year in 2001. As a senior, Layne established Cornell records for goals (20) and points (53) scored in a season.

Layne ranks second on the career list with 42 goals and 113 points. She is fourth in career assists with 29. Layne helped lead the Rams to a runner-up finish in the 2001 IIAC Tournament and a school-record 14 wins during the 1998 season. The Rams compiled a 29-8-1 mark against conference foes during Layne's career.
