Wright made history on the tennis court, where he finished his Cornell career as an all-American at the 1976 NCAA Championships. The Topeka, Kan., native partnered with Scott Haymond for a formidable doubles pair, going 2-1 at nationals and advancing to the quarterfinals to earn all-America accolades.

Wright also won a singles match in his NCAA debut. He led the Rams to a program-best sixth-place team finish at nationals.

Wright was Cornell’s No. 1 player during a banner-filled 1976 season in which the Rams went undefeated in duals with a 10-0 mark. Wright won the MWC championship at No. 1 doubles, becoming Cornell’s first conference titlist in the sport. That senior year, he fashioned a 14-2 doubles record and went 10-2 in singles during the regular season.

Wright played at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles all four seasons for the Rams. He was also a school-record holder on the swim team and lettered four years in football.  Â
